What Kind Of Parenting Style Is The Best Overall Method...

What kind of parenting style is the best overall method for the most children? That is the question that will be explored as the three major styles of parenting are examined throughout this essay. I will be analyzing these three styles known as permissive, authoritarian and authoritative parenting. Each style has various levels of what Diana Baumrind classified as demandingness and responsiveness. These characteristics determine which style or category of parenting that a person best fits. The concept of the three major parenting styles allows a better understanding of the effects of parenting on a child’s behaviour and development. Children of permissive parents live their lives without knowing what a lack of freedom feels like. These kids have no understanding of rules, chores or being told what to do. They live a carefree childhood without the knowledge of responsibilities. These children are considered the to be the outcome of permissive parenting. This style of parenting was categorized by psychologist Diana Baumrind. She would describe children with permissive parents as immature and disruptive. One online article defines permissive parenting as â€Å"...a type of parenting style characterized by low demands with high responsiveness† (Cherry, â€Å"What Is Permissive Parenting?†). Baumrind categorized the three main parenting styles based on what she called demandingness and responsiveness.
